Cutting Edge Conversations: Chemicals, Manufacturing & Controls

On November 16th, Scientist.com hosted speakers from Aragen, MoloX, and RISE Research Institutes of Sweden to discuss the challenges and innovations in Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls (CMC) for research. To kick off the webinar, the host Frederik Deroose, VP at Scientist.com and CMC subject matter expert, gave a general overview of the difficulties that surround sourcing CMC such as identifying suppliers, ensuring compliance, sourcing innovative CMC tools and technologies, and so on. Our speakers then went on to present how their organizations are working to combat these challenges through their own cutting edge innovations.


The first presenter was Dr. Mujeebur Rahuman, SVP & Head, Chemical Development Solutions at Aragen

Dr. Mujeebur Rahuman has two decades worth of experience handling NCE process development, CRAMS, generic API development, DMF filing, technology development, innovation and cGMP manufacturing projects. Rahuman is responsible for the design and commissioning of the Aragen kilo labo, process development lab and pilot plant. Before joining Aragen, he worked with Syngene international, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Shasun Research Center and SABIC Technology Center. During his presentation, Dr. Mujeebur Rahuman discussed how to accelerate IND submission (GMP Production).

Aragen Life Sciences offers R&D and Manufacturing solutions (CRO/CDMO) for life sciences industries worldwide. They offer end-to-end integrated or standalone solutions for small and large molecules. They were established in 2001, and since then have expanded to a network of sites located globally with a team of 3000+ scientists and 400 PhDs. Through their expertise, Aragen Life Sciences has helped over 450 customers to advance their research programs from discovery to commercialization.


Next, was Dr. Holger von Moeller from MoloX

Dr. Holger von Moeller has 20 years of experience in proteins and protein crystallography. He studied Biochemistry in Berlin and Bochum, did his PhD at EMBL Heidelberg, then worked as a postdoc at MPI Martinsried and moved with an EMBO fellowship to the free university of Berlin. Also, von Moeller co-founded MoloX in 2012 and has been the CEO since. During his presentation, von Moeller highlighted why “Every crystal counts” and discussed MoloX’s approach of streamlining diffraction data collection on modern synchrotrons for hts/fbs projects to deliver the best data possible to clients at an unmatched price. He also introduced MoloX’s large fragment-based screening campaign performed at a cutting edge synchrotron to bring structural information to their clients in a quicker and more cost-effective manner.

MoloX, founded in Berlin in 2012, has a mission to deliver excellence in structural biology to their clients. They work with academic and industrial clients, providing pure proteins for research purposes and full service for structural biology projects. Operating at the interface between academic and industry, they facilitate connections and exchange and provide access to novel technologies. They also act as a link to large research infrastructures such as synchrotrons and electron microscopy facilities.


Last but not least, was Fernando Huerta from RISE Research Institutes of Sweden

Fernando Huerta obtained his BSc and PhD degree in organic chemistry from the University of Alicante. After his postdoc at Stockholm University where he worked on dynamic kinetic resolution of secondary alcohols, he became associate professor at the University of Alicante. Then, in 2002 he moved to Stockholm where he began working at AstraZeneca as a medicinal chemist. In 2012, along with two of his former AstraZeneca colleagues, Huerta founded Chemnotia in Stockholm. He played a prominent role in the development of IC Forward Reaction Prediction. Since 2016, Huerta has worked as Senior Researcher/Project Leader at Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE). During his presentation, Huerta went on to discuss retrosynthetic analysis.
