Scientist on July 2, 2024

This installment of Supplier Spotlight® highlights PromoCell, a German premier manufacturer of cell culture products that helps scientists do better research with a world-class portfolio of human primary, stem and blood cells as well as optimized cell culture media.

1. What is your company’s mission?

At PromoCell, our mission is to support scientists worldwide by providing the best human cell culture products delivered by experts who share our fascination for science. Scientific research moves our world forward, and we’re proud to have been a part of that progress for almost 35 years, helping scientists and researchers undertake groundbreaking research with high-quality products and services they can rely on.

We go the extra mile for our customers because, as fellow scientists, we truly believe in their work. This philosophy underpins everything we do — We call this ‘Human Centered Science’.

2. What products and services do you offer?

We offer a broad range of human primary, stem and blood cells as well as optimized cell culture media.

HLA-typed human primary cells: We cater to specific requirements, such as donor profiles and matched donors from over 100 HLA-typed donors. We also provide easy and fast access to regulatory documentation through a designated specialist in addition to individual services like custom cell isolation, expansion and quality control.

EXCiPACT™ GMP certified produced cell culture media: To ensure a smooth transition of cell-based therapies from bench to commercial manufacture, cell culture media and reagents manufactured in compliance with IPEC international GMP guidelines should be used during preclinical research. Our entire development pipeline is designed to enable compliance with these regulatory guidelines.

3. What problems do you solve?

Sourcing tested and standardized cell cultures can be challenging. Therefore, we offer cell culture products manufactured with the highest possible level of standardization. Our cells and media are precisely matched, ensuring reliable cell consistency and identity.

In addition, we provide customized products that meet specific requirements, such as donor characteristics, cell passages, and large batches with over 100 vials. Another very useful service that we offer is “Extended Rights Usage”. This allows our customers to use our cells as part of their production processes or for quality control.

4. What are the most innovative tools and technologies that you offer?

One of our most innovative products is our next-generation cryopreservation medium, Cryo-SFM Plus, which minimizes freezing damage. Based on our innovative antioxidant technology, our protein- and animal component-free cell freezing medium provides better cell viability, attachment and growth to maximize cell yield after thawing.

Another innovation is our Cancer Media Toolbox, which can help researchers establish primary cancer cell lines from biopsies, develop 3D tumor models and build screening assays. All media types maintain cancer stem cells as they play a critical role in tumor initiation, progression and metastasis. The media are synthetic, animal component-free and xeno-free, and contain all the nutrients necessary for cell growth and long-term cultivation in either 2D or 3D.

5. What are your competitive advantages?

We own our entire manufacturing process. This means that we have full control over tissue sourcing and related regulatory information that includes easy and traceable access to ethical documentation, including informed consent.

Fast, personalized support: Our customers always communicate with the same specialist and get fast and precise answers.

Excellent availability of products: Sourcing and production remain in-house, which means that we have constant in-stock availability and are highly reliable.

6. Who are your clients?

Our customers operate throughout the pharma and biotech industry as well as in government and life science academia in 36 countries.

7. What new products and services are you developing in 2024?

Earlier this year, we released our new protein- and animal component-free cryopreservation medium, Cryo-SFM Plus. Its key features include our innovative antioxidant technology, offering better cell viability, attachment and growth to maximize cell yield after thawing.

We are also expanding our cell culture media portfolio produced according to EXCiPACT™ GMP standards to include more products for the development of cell and gene therapies.

8. Where are your laboratories and offices located?

We have teams in Europe and the USA. Our headquarters and laboratories are located in Heidelberg, Germany — a global hotspot for science — from where we provide our products to customers in 36 countries. Additionally, having a team in the US guarantees easy communication with our scientific support and application specialists for our North American customers.
