How BPS Bioscience Supports Every Stage of R&D: The Proof Is in the Science

This blog post was written by BPS Bioscience. BPS Bioscience develops innovative solutions for life-science research, offering a catalog of over 5,000 high-quality cell lines, viruses, proteins, and biochemical or cell-based assays. In addition to its product offerings, we also operate as a CRO, providing custom assay and cell development services as well as screening and profiling support to accelerate research programs. Their services are available on Scientist.com.

Scientific research often moves faster than resources allow. Whether the project lacks equipment or specialized expertise to move forward at the required pace, access to ready-made tools and expert support can make all the difference. That’s where BPS Bioscience can support acceleration.

Founded in 2005 and based in San Diego (CA), BPS Bioscience is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, a milestone that marks two decades of commitment to empowering scientists with ready-to-use high-quality reagents and custom research services. Since making our first recombinant enzyme, sphingosine kinase, we’ve grown into a company offering more than 5,000 off-the-shelf tools, now including cell lines, lentiviruses, AAVs and biochemical assay kits.

Alongside these products, we operate as a boutique contract research organization (CRO), performing custom assay and cell line development, as well as screening and profiling services for both small and large projects.

A Scientist-Driven CRO

At BPS Bioscience, science drives everything we do. The company was founded by a scientist, Dr. Henry Zhu, PhD, and remains scientist-led, with more than 40% of our team holding a Ph.D. This deep technical expertise allows us to understand the challenges our customers face and to design tools that are directly relevant to their research.

Customers have direct access to our scientists, a deeply appreciated aspect of our services. These discussions help ensure that we fully understand the context and details of each project, whether it involves an antibody screening, enzyme inhibition or cell signaling study. Because we “speak the same language,” we can tailor our work precisely to meet each customer’s experimental goals.

Why Scientists Turn to Our Services

The availability of the right tools is often what determines how fast research can progress. Not every lab has the time, infrastructure or expertise to develop custom assays or cell models in-house. By providing these tools and services, BPS Bioscience enables scientists to test hypotheses and evaluate therapeutic candidates more efficiently, without needing to build everything from scratch.

Examples include:

  • Early-stage projects or limited budgets: If you want to test an idea before committing to larger investments, you can use our cell-based assay screening services rather than purchasing or developing your own cell line.
  • Antibody development: When comparing multiple antibody iterations for their IC₅₀ or blocking activity, our ELISA-based services can quickly provide accurate, reproducible data.
  • Small-molecule drug discovery: If your focus is on enzyme inhibition, our enzymatic activity assay services offer reliable kinetic and endpoint analyses.

We also offer services for many of the assay kits we manufacture. So, if you find a kit that suits your needs but don’t have the bandwidth to run it in-house, chances are we can perform the assay for you as a custom service. And if the assay or cell line you need doesn’t exist yet, our development team can make it.

Customization: The Core of Innovation

Every scientific question is unique, and so are the tools required to answer it. That’s why customization is at the heart of our approach. Whether we’re designing a new cell line, developing an assay or adapting an existing platform, our goal is to provide precisely targeted experimental solutions rather than one-size-fits-all.

Advances in technologies like CRISPR and synthetic biology now allow researchers to model specific biological questions with remarkable precision. We embrace these innovations to help our customers generate more relevant and insightful data while reducing unnecessary complexity.

Looking Ahead

As we enter our third decade, BPS Bioscience remains focused on its mission: to empower scientists with high-quality reagents and services that accelerate the development of life-saving therapies.

Our roadmap includes:

  • Continued expansion of the portfolio in immunotherapy, gene editing, autoimmune, metabolic and neurological research tools.
  • The development of next-generation assays and engineered cell lines.
  • A sustained commitment to collaboration, customization and scientific excellence.

In a world where urgent unmet therapeutic needs make research timelines tight and where innovation never slows, BPS Bioscience continues to serve as a trusted global partner.
